David Bowie hi-tech: he worked to “Verbasizer” software to compose … – The Republic

INNOVATOR, change artist, eclectic, David Bowie has always ridden and anticipated change and novelty, this was also a big fan of technology. A drive of curiosity and ingenuity, insight and progress has always guided his art. Did they know that in the ’90s he worked in Verbasizer , a software to compose songs and that was the first artist to create a site with his internet provider, BowieNet , he entered the Guinness Book of Records. The “White Duke”, who fantasized life on Mars and that spoke of space oddities, had realized the potential of technological innovation and the ability to apply it to his music.

The software exploiting the “cut – up”, one the methods of composition of Bowie, playing it on your computer using an application. The method was to take random words from newspapers, cut them, put them in a container and then reassemble the fragments of a sheet of paper. It was the computer Ty Roberts to transpose this technique in Verbasizer, used by the artist to compose the disc Outside , in 1995. In a video, which can be found on YouTube , Bowie shows the operation of the app and explains how it was used to compose his pieces.

In 1998, also, the singer launched a website with its own Internet providers, called BowieNet, through which any fan could customize their homepage and had 5 Mb of space to exercise their creativity. The platform also had games, new songs and a chat whose dominant theme was the glam-rock, the genre invented by David Bowie. “I wanted to create an environment where not only my fans but all music lovers could be part of a community,” he said then Bowie. When Facebook probably had not even the head of Zuckerberg , Bowie had already sensed the opportunity for sharing and comparing, a “socialization intellectual”, where a group talk and share ideas and reflections.
