PlaNet, Google’s software that recognizes places in the pictures – The Republic

Artificial INTELLIGENCE is the great challenge of the future, judging by the investments of technology giants like Facebook, Microsoft, Apple and Google. Just by the Mountain View company comes a new software that can recognize the places in the pictures though not portray famous monuments or recognizable landscapes and if they are not provided with geolocation information. It’s called PlaNet and uses the “ deep learning “, or machine learning possible thanks to artificial intelligence technologies that simulate the human brain.

The performance of PlaNet seem to be already higher than those of a human being. The engineer Tobias Weyand , which will guide the development team, has put competing software with ten people, experienced travelers, the online game geoguessr.com. The program has won 28 times out of 50. PlaNet offers unknown details fire, such as roads, intersections, or regular glimpses of anonymous landscapes to trace the location of the photo. Tested with over two million images, reports the website of MIT Tech Review, PlaNet managed to guess the places at various levels: in 3.6% of cases identified the exact street in 10.1% of cases it stopped at the city of origin. The nation was guessed in 28.4% of cases and the continent in almost half (48%).
