“Open source in industrial automation,” it is the title of a useful conference to be held in Vicenza, organized by Confindustria. The meeting will discuss how to use the free software in the company, taking advantage of the opportunities but also avoiding legal risks. It will also be presented the case Videotec. “The use of open source software – explains Confindustria in a presentation of the event known -, especially in the industrial automation sector, is widespread and extended today, both in small and large companies. At the same time the use is often unconscious and the legal implications are vastly undervalued by businesses. It is a delicate issue because the company management is not always aware of the fact that various open source software components are found in their products which will then be distributed and sold on international markets. This unawareness, accompanied to the mistaken belief that the open source software you can do anything, no legal or commercial constraints, involves serious risks for the company that uses them. “
The meeting will explain So how the company can defend itself against risks without giving up the benefits of free software (no licensing fees, the ability to modify the code, the absence of links with the supplier).
