The FBI used the software Hacking Team to find users TOR … – Tom’s Hardware

From the huge amount of email escaped to Hacking Team, and still under analysis by the entire world, we learn that even the FBI was using RCS , the remote control system of the Italian company , for his investigations.

In one of the email reads: “The unit of the FBI is using our system for a rather small, it seems, like a backup system than some other software that typically use. It is likely to renew the agreement … “

In September last year, the FBI has bought a “license” to Galileo to use it, as you can imagine from some email to track down the criminals ip connected via TOR network.

Because the IP is revealed, however, it requires that the machine of the suspect is present the scout of Galileo and then the agents discussed the need to send an email with a pdf or another file type that could inoculate the surveillance software.

“We’ll need to send him an email with a PDF document or to install hopefully the scouts.”

Once the infection has occurred, becomes easy to get the ip of the machine connected to the Tor network and possibly retrieve the list of installed programs.

An internal email Hacking Team in turn reinforces the concept of the PC connected to the violation of TOR was becoming important . An FBI agent says that “the features that seek more are those dedicated to TOR, the VPN and infection without the need to click”.

Moreover, the number of investigations, slamming against the wall of the anonymizing network for excellence are in strong growth : “In the past” – says another email of the same agent – “targets of investigations that used TOR accounted for about 20% of the total, now we are at 60%. “
