The AI beat the man in the game as the world’s most difficult table, the Chinese Go: AlphaGo, the program of Google DeepMind, beat 1 to 0 in Seoul one of the five best players in the world, Lee Sedol, in the first of five games provided by the challenge. The matches will continue until Tuesday, March 15. At stake is a million dollars and, if he wins AlphaGo, the prize will go to charity.
The challenge was hard fought from the very first moves and the news of the victory of artificial intelligence is doing the rounds of social networks, where experts speak of “important step forward for artificial intelligence, because it shows that the program developed by Google DeepMind has learned one of the most creative games and ever conceived.”
Twitter experts Go Milan Club say that, compared to games in October, AlphaGo improved. The challenge was exciting from the start and, says the Go Club of Milan, Lee abandoned the move 186, when he was trailing by a few points.
The victory is significant because the ancient board game China, with almost infinite number of possible moves (vastly greater than that of chess), requires players to rely on intuition.
But AlphaGo is designed to mimic the ability of human intuition , taking as a model the neural networks of the human brain. Thanks to this characteristic, the software plays so similar to man, and last year defeated 5 to 0 the European go champion.
Since then, the AlphaGo performances have steadily improved and the program he prepared to challenge with the go champion after playing millions of games against itself.
