Best antivirus software for the Mac in 2014 – Tom’s Hardware

->

The Mac really need virus protection? Many people use them regularly and never found a virus or malware. But the Mac malware exist, and even if they are not as common as those of Windows, are constantly increasing. On the one hand, therefore, it is appropriate to protect your Mac, but at the same time there is no need to exaggerate figures paying out too much.

For this reason, we looked at five of the most popular antivirus programs for Mac OS X: Avast Free (free), Bitdefender (50 euro per year), ClamXav 2 (free), Intego Internet Security (40 euro per year) and Sophos (free).

We evaluated each product based on of a series of criteria, including the interface, the performance, protection and additional features. It is a product intuitive and easy to use? He slowed the Mac during a scan? It is able to detect and remove malware? There are the additional features?

We tested all five anti-virus on the same MacBook Air: a 13-inch model of the beginning of 2014 with an Intel Core i5 1.4 GHz processor and 4 GB of RAM running Mac OS X 10.9.3.

In order to evaluate the speed of the computer during the execution of each software, we used the benchmark Geekbench 3. The more the score went down during a scan, the greater was the impact of ‘ antivirus on system performance.

The Mac then need an antivirus? What is the antivirus that offers the best compromise between security, usability, performance, impact and extra features? Check out our reviews to find the right program for you.

Best Antivirus for Mac

Sophos Home Edition has all the features you want from a virus scanner, including scanner, web-links, and scheduled scanning option. The software also offers excellent malware protection without affecting the performance too. Sophos earns our award “Editor’s Choice” because it is the most complete, and most are free.

Second place, just a step from the first

A complete anti-virus program. Avast offers strong protection against viruses and malware, has a low impact on the performance of the Mac, and a hub for product management Avast on other devices. The only flaw is the lack of a scan scheduled.

Best Antivirus for a fee

Intego has a useful firewall to manage Wi-Fi connections, with whom he also monitor the applications that connect to the Internet. This program has resulted in minimal impact on performance during a scan, but Intego Mac Security X8 does not have a web link scanner, fundamental against automatic downloads and phishing attempts.

Best Protection

BitDefender Antivirus received the highest scores in malware detection is one of the five products we evaluated. The browser plugin TrafficLight that analyzes the links for malware and phishing attempts is another plus. But for an annual subscription of 50 Euros, you would expect at least a scan pianficata.

Option Open-Source

A relic of the early days of Mac OS X. The only redeeming quality of ClamXav 2 is that it is an open-source software. Its interface is poor, with no extra features and without a protective web-links. Strangely is available in two versions, depending on whether you downloaded from the official website or the App Store. In the second case, the version does not have a malware scanner, a feature that we believe are essential.
