“An important assessment tool to put in place a number of more effective interventions and custom”. Paul Stofella , director of business development of Exprivia healthcare IT , explains the project “ SMARTool “, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon program 2020 with the aim to develop solutions support to the prevention and treatment of related heart disease coronary atherosclerosis.

Along with Exprivia and the Institute of Clinical Physiology of the CNR in Pisa, the project coordinator, cooperate to “SMARTool” nine partners (public and private, from different countries) specialized in medical and scientific research, in the design of software applications for health and in the production of miniaturized devices for medical applications. In detail the initiative – “began last January 1, will end in mid-2019,” says Stofella – aims to develop a software platform, based on technology cloud , which allows the modeling computer simulation of the formation and growth of coronary plaque. Using techniques of human computer interaction , you can have a 3D visual representation of the coronary arteries and the development of plaque, in order to predict its evolution and determine the risk of acute complications (thanks also integration with all the individual patient related clinical data).

The platform will be used, in a vision of personalized medicine, “as a clinical decision support tool for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of coronary heart disease”, resumes Stofella, convinced “of the importance of information technology to the health service and the health of citizens. ” And conscious, however, “that in Italy there is great interest around the universe e-health, what is lacking is investment

In the case of “SMARTool”, the Exprivia contribution is the development of a clinical repository on cloud technology capable of acquiring a number of structured information – from genetic data with those of the laboratory to the reports – from all involved clinical partners, putting them available technical partners of the project will perform the modeling and simulations. And again, part of the remit of the Exprivia collaboration in development of the final platform for decision support to the treatment of patients with coronary artery disease, to be validated at the end of the project by means of a pilot study in selected clinical centers.
