School and free software: a marriage that to be done? – Tech Economy

Francis Fusillo is a special education teacher in the province of Verona, a prof. volcanic ones that would be enough for one school to improve the overall situation. “I have always believed in the inclusion of educational actions – says Francesco Fusillo – and at the end of the eighties I used the first PCs to school. The first feeling to technologies was mistrust because the kids activities held by themselves and the teaching inclusion was absent. “

Over the years, however Fusillo includes open computing potential and experience what this could make life easier for the disabled. And it was love at first sight.

How did you come to the project So.Di.Linux ?
I started looking for open source software for the Windows world that allowed me to open my proposals teaching the class. In 2006 I had read a review of free software made by CNR, which had published a collection named So.Di.Linux (educational software for Linux).
That was for me an epiphany. I had found the way to free education and open prospects for digital freedom even in school. Since then the relationship with the group CNR ITD has not waned and today we are a team that shared purpose and values.

What are the reasons for suggesting free software a fellow teacher?
first, the freedom to produce processed readable by anyone in time; to use tools (such as digital pen I’m using right now) freely as well as the knowledge that using free software feeds a community.

Actively Participate in community of free software? What projects do you follow?
I collaborate with the CNR to develop So.Di.Linux mainly distributed in schools and two mailing lists mood related to this project. Also actively participated to another discussion list in educational technology Wiildos .

Public collections of open source and freeware applications for teaching school with DSA and BES, taking care of the package KIT_PC_DSA .
coordinate the project of Italian development ARAWORD AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) that we have adopted from Spain. It also collaborates with various CTS (Territorial Support Centres for Technology for handicapp) in the dissemination of good teaching practices that use open source software as a support to the actions of educational innovation.

If i were to give a definition of community?
People who share the values and open to mutual collaboration, each with its skills and potential.

What frequent more willingly and why?
Sodilinux, because I open myself. We are now about 800 and is for me a responsibility to animate and encourage its development. Wiildos, born before and which I attended for the development of interactive whiteboard free and that is more interested in technical matters of free software and low-cost technologies.

“Opensource and Inclusion” is a list linked to my site, attended by teachers that I have met in training or dissemination events and they ask me to stay informed. “NTD of CTS” operators is an institutional list of CTS, in which I carry attention to educational solutions and developments related to the inclusion of free software. It ‘a very important list because it participates in INDIRE, which is read and linked to the Ministry of Education.
