Toonz, for the digital animation software becomes open source – Macity (Blog)

Toonz, well-known software for video animation will become open source as early as next March 26, thanks to the agreement concluded between Digital Video and Dwango.

the well-known program for video animation, which also gave birth to animated hit series such as Futurama is about to become Open Source. Via press, it is the same manufacturer, Digital Video, to announce the agreement with the Japanese publisher Dwango, which will acquire the software, under the condition that is to be published an Open Source based platform for my food. OpenToonz, this is the name chosen, will be available to download free from Saturday, March 26 for the animators of the community.

OpenToonz will include new features developed by Studio Ghibli, the legendary film studio of Japanese animated film based by Hayao Miyazaki, from where they were born films considered masterpieces of the genre worldwide. This version will be called Toonz Ghibli Edition. Through the new Dwango Agreement will create a platform through which you can kick off a collaboration between the research laboratories and the animation industry. In this way, Digital Video is oriented to the open source business model, offering animation industry services, including commissioning, installation and configuration, training, support and customization and, at the same time, allowing the animators to use community free software state of the art technology.

the Toonz software, however, will continue to survive as a premium application; and in fact, next to OpenToonz the same video Digital will continue to develop and sell a premium version, precisely called ToonzPremium, at a competitive price, offering users a high rate of customization for their projects. On the official website toonzpremium is available a brochure and a comprehensive list of the new services is available on the site.

The agreement was obviously well received by all parties and the same Claudio Mattei, CEO Digital Video, expressed great satisfaction with the partnership,
seen as a tool that enabled Digital Video to realize one of its strategies, ie to make Toonz a worldwide standard for 2D animation.

the Open Source version of TOONZ will be officially unveiled in Tokyo at Japan Anime 26 and 27 March and will therefore be available to download as early as next Saturday.
