Freedom installing the software we want on our PC
Today , our ability to innovate – by sharing our ideas, and adding value to the ideas that others have shared with us, in an uninterrupted continuum that expresses the potential of collective intelligence – depends ever more closely by technology. Without a PC, I could not write this article and I could send it to the editor, the preparation could not receive and publish it, and you could not read it.
Technology it’s affecting our potential of individuals able to create something different and higher than our individuality, and this is due – in part – to the limitations that some big companies try to impose on our freedom. For example, limiting the ability to install or change applications on the PC, or preventing the change of the PC because it responds best to our needs.
Today is the Day International against Digital Rights Management (DRM or Digital Rights Management, which in reality should be Digital Restrictions Management as DRM impose restrictions and do not handle fees if not the big companies that develop software and content).
For example, why digital books regularly purchased can only be read on a device, which is almost always the one sold by the same company from which I bought the book itself? A paper book does not impose the same restriction, and could be read by more people without limitations. The same goes for music.
The software is no exception, although many users do not perceive even the conditioning that are intentionally submitted by the companies, as per as in the case of the PC that can only be installed in Windows as the machine itself prevents – those without technical skills – to switch to operating systems widely best, and more free (and free).
Of course, the companies that have developed their business model on privatization – rather than sharing – knowledge, can not do anything but defend their positions with these artifices, and divert other expenditure categories – lawyers and lobbyists – money that could otherwise invest in innovation.
What to read books and listen to music in digital format on any device is a sacred right of the users, who must be defended, as well as defense be able to choose the software to install on your PC, from the operating system. Before making a purchase, ask about the presence of DRM, and the ability to install free software: only in this way you will have the opportunity to share knowledge – in strict compliance with the law – adding value to what others have shared with you.
If you want to learn more, here is the manifesto signed by The Document Foundation and Association LibreItalia NGO, and here’s the website that speaks so broad and comprehensive problem of DRM.
