The software to discover melanoma signed Federico II – The Morning

A software able to diagnose melanoma, born of a difficult personal experience of illness. A medical instrument design were Professor Antonio Pietrosanto, professor of electronic measurement in the University of Salerno, and Professor Gabriella Fabbrocini, dermatologist of Federico II.

A work started 12 years ago, when she was diagnosed with Professor Pietrosanto skin cancer: “On that occasion – he says – I found that the diagnosis of melanoma was essentially relied on the experience of the dermatologist and the images of the dermatoscope. I talked to Gabriella Fabbrocini, I suggested that we put together our respective skills and give life to a research project that would lead to the realization of a software capable of supporting the dermatologist in the diagnosis. “

Twelve years after that ‘ intuition became the APA i3D. Two versions: one to be downloaded on a PC and to use the image of the dermatoscope; the other to be used by mobile (both Android Ios). In this case, the dermatologist loads the image on an ad hoc server that thanks to a search engine inferential (which is therefore capable of starting from a question to produce another) processes the photo and ultimately produces a score for the case under consideration. The evaluation comes on the basis of a check listi based on 7 parameters. A score above 3 leads to a diagnosis of melanoma.

The most interesting aspect is that the software is not limited to the dermatologist to suggest a diagnosis, but also provides all the tools to assess the conclusion and eventually validate it. This means offering more skills to dermatologists who are not experts in melanoma and a strong support for the ones who are specialists in this disease.

“At this point – explains Fabbrocini – we decided to create a start-up could transform the results of research into a product. Thanks to an invitation to Invitalia in 2014 we founded Hippocratic Imaging, which is now being converted into a spin-off academic. ” Melanoma will be discussed tomorrow in Anacapri, at the media center ‘Mario Cacace’ the first Italian Hackathon on e-health applied to the diagnosis of melanoma. In three days, international experts of dermatology will meet with programmers, business traders, web designers and communications experts, to meet on the subject of ‘e-health and to find new avenues for the development of the sector. Participants will have access all’hackathon free i3D app, the photo database of dermatoscopie, with all the case history and analyzed the algorithm of image segmentation, with the goal of building a new model of scientific research.
